WSPMF Annual Report . . .

Washington State Patrol Memorial Foundation
Fiscal Year Update -- 10/01/15 thru 9/30/16

Since 1982, the Washington State Patrol Memorial Foundation (WSPMF) has provided $1,936,323 in financial assistance to Washington State Patrol employees and their families. This year marks the 24th year of the WSPMF scholarship program. The WSPMF awarded 10 new scholarships and 17 renewable scholarships totaling $27,634. These scholarships are awarded annually and contributing members or their immediate family may apply.

Money raised at the annual memorial dinner provides assistance to the children of our fallen officers to attend college. Megan Saunders, daughter of Trooper James Saunders who died in the line of duty on October 7, 1999, is attending the University of Washington. The Foundation provided $12,658 to her this last year. Emily Hanger, daughter of Detective Brent Hanger who died in the line of duty on August 6, 2015 is attending Western WA University. The foundation provided assistance in the amount of $9,285 to Emily this last year.

This year marks the 25th year of the scholarship program for WSP employees, their spouses and children. The WSPMF provided 5 new scholarships and 14 renewable scholarships in the last fiscal year, totaling $19,000 to families of the Washington State Patrol.

In addition to scholarships, the WSPMF provided $77,890 in assistance to WSP families in need this year. While much of the assistance provided by the WSPMF is confidential in nature, the WSPMF is proud to disclose its involvement in the following activities:

  • The WSPMF provided financial assistance to build the WSP King County Fallen Trooper Memorial at the Bellevue District Office. On May 20, 2016, a dedication ceremony of the memorial was held to honor Troopers: Irving Thorsvig, William Pautzke, Allen Ludden, Paul Johnson, Clarence Johnson, Glenda Thomas, Clifford Hansell, Steven Frink and Captain Loren Ray.
  • The WSPMF Dinner, held at the Tulalip Resort in Marysville on April 30, 2016, raised $25,925 for our Fallen Officers’ Spouse and Children College Fund. Family members of Troopers Brent Hanger, Sean O’Connell, James Saunders, Steven Frink, Ray Hawn, Clifford Hansell, James Gain, Thomas Hendrickson, Frank Noble, Ernest Eichhorn, Irving Thorsvig and Officer Joseph Modlin attended the Memorial Dinner as our guests. Core Values award recipients, Trooper Carlos Mata and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers Anthony Spackman and Brian Ailinger, read the names of our fallen officers and were our guests for the evening.

The WSPMF currently has 1,171 contributing members (970 active and 201 retired employees). To be a voting member of the WSPMF, you must contribute $5 per month or $2.50 a pay period. This minimal deduction goes a long way toward helping WSP families in times of need. If you would like to be a contributing member of the WSPMF, please request the form through Sharon Phillips at sharon@wspmf.org or (360) 597-4411.
